Thought Stopping Technique.

This is a simple, but effective, CBT technique which aims to intercept negative thoughts as they arise and immediately convert them into more positive, helpful cognitions.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Be vigilant for a negative thought.

2. Stop. Take a mindful breath.

3. Examine the thought you are focusing on.

4. Notice any sensations that have arisen in your body.

5. Pause.

6. Re-examine the thought.

7. Ask yourself what is the big picture surrounding the thought.

8. Identify a different way of looking at the situation.

9. Ask yourself how critical is the thought.

10. What would you say to a friend who was having a similar thought?

11. Identify what is the best thing you could do or say right now to help yourself?

12. Do it!
